About Ember
Ember is the embodiment of a true companion gundog. In the field, she is impressive—fast, driven, and hard-charging—yet remains incredibly manageable and cooperative. She’s always ready to go but waits patiently and steadily until called upon.
In the duck blind, Ember is quiet, steady, and unnoticeable. She’s hunted from a variety of setups: inside layout blinds, remotely in a MoMarsh, at my side on farm ponds, and from boats. Her adaptability and reliability are unmatched—she’s the same dog in the training field as she is in the blind. Her compact size makes her ideal for hunting from a boat or canoe and staying out of the way in tight spaces. Ember has hunted swamps in North Carolina, fields in Canada, and impoundments in Kansas, excelling in every environment.
She’s also been used extensively as a flushing dog in front of pointing dogs. Ember is extremely steady, highly manageable, and flushes birds with enthusiasm and power. Her small size makes her particularly well-suited for dense cover and briar thickets, especially when hunting woodcock.
Her hunt test career was equally impressive. Ember earned her Hunting Retriever Champion title, Senior Hunter Retriever, and became the 27th Labrador to earn a Master Hunter Upland title. Her high drive and cooperative nature made her an exciting dog to compete with—but her true joy is in quiet early mornings, watching wood ducks fly.
Ember also plays a key role in helping me train other retrievers and pointing dogs. Her impulse control is exceptional—she can watch others work all day without interfering, but springs into action the moment I call her.
From puppyhood, Ember was a natural. She had a strong retrieve instinct, has always loved water, learned quickly, and was easy to crate and potty train. She earned AKC Trick Dog titles by 9 weeks old and was assisting in seminars and training pointing dogs by 10 weeks.
Ember lives with me and is my constant companion. Her default mode is to quietly relax until needed. She’s the perfect travel partner, loves to ride shotgun, and enjoys being involved in everything I do. She’s a joy to take to restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries, she's neutral around people and dogs, and exceptionally environmentally stable. She is the complete package: well-rounded, reliable, trustworthy, a team player, coperative and exceptional in every way.
About Rudy
Rudy is an accomplished male, originally trained as a duck dog and constant companion. He was raised by an amateur owner while in college and spent his early years in the duck blind and riding shotgun around campus. He showed impressive drive, resilience, and cooperation at an early age. Rudy earned his HRC seasoned title with no formal training (videos available); it wasn’t until after his HR title and around 3-4 years of age that he went through force fetch, pile work, t drill, etc. Rudy has been on annual hunting trips to Arkansas and is always pleasant to hunt over.
With formal training, Rudy quickly earned his finished title and went on to pass 3 grands, awarding him a well-deserved 3XGRHRCH title. Rudy is an extremely talented marking dog, making it to the third series of a competitive 77-dog qualifying stake. Rudy has racked up an impressive 895 HRC points, is in the honorary 500 point club, and has 5 of the 6 necessary Master Hunter passes for his MH title. He was retired early as his owner dove into field trials with his other dogs.
In training, Rudy has the demeanor of a British lab, but is not soft and handles pressure well. Rudy’s stand out qualities are his resilience, steadiness at the line, solid nerves, great nose and exceptional trainability. He loves to learn and is a quick study. Rudy has been bred and his puppies are smart, exhibit HIGH trainability, outstanding marking, high drive, with amazing off switches. They have accomplished season and finished level titles.
At home, Rudy is a phenomenal family dog. He is calm, quiet and has super manners. He is easy to be around and laid back. Rudy is a classic British Lab in structure and demeanor.
"I have witnessed Ember’s development from the day Emily brought her home at 8 weeks. She was a precocious puppy, always confident, always curious. She is beautifully balanced expressing extreme drive one moment, and docile and gentle the next. She quests very hard in the uplands while demonstrating high level control at the most subtle cue from Emily. There’s always more action on Ember’s side of the line during a pheasant hunt. In the duck blind she is never in the way, she just waits patiently between volleys until called into action at which point she goes about her duties with a workman like attitude. She is capable of extreme precision when handled, and happy to work independently trailing and tracking cripples as well as any dog I’ve seen. When not at work Ember is out of sight, out of mind, unless invited to interact. She is social and confident, an absolute joy to be around. Ember and Emily share a rare bond, the kind we all want with our own dogs. " - Grayson Guyer, Lost Highway Kennels
